THE MAKERS of BlackBerry smartphones, Research in Motion (RIM) has temporarily agreed with the security agencies to give them access to its messenger services. The agreement has somehow, created a ray of hope amidst the million strong BlackBerry users in India as well as the company that the tussle would be permanently resolved by January end, an official from the company said on Friday.
On the possible agreement, a spokesperson from the home ministry said that following continuing discussions of RIM with (the) government of India on the issue of providing access for lawful interception, RIM has set up an interim arrangement for lawful interception of messenger services. The spokesperson further added that RIM has assured that they will be providing a final solution for lawful interception of BBM services by Jan 31. "Accordingly, the BBM services will continue to be available.”
It may be noticed that, the government and security agencies had previously extended the deadline for the manufacturers of the BlackBerry to provide a solution by December 31.Highly placed sources further added that the mobile manufacturers have brought into the government's notice that the former will not be able to provide any technology on the interception of BlackBerry Enterprise Services (BES) which for long has also been under the scanner of security agencies.
