#Blessed: Pope makes his debut on Instagram
Pope Francis on Saturday got himself an Instagram account under the name @Franciscus – Latin for Francis.

The Pope had a dream debut on Instagram as within hours he had 750,000 followers. The first Instagram post of the Pope showed him with his head bowed, and hands clasped in praying position, with a caption reading "Pray for me".

Another post a few hours later showed Pope Francis bowing his head again behind a large gold cross. The Vatican has said that the Pope's feeds will include photos and videos from his daily life that highlight "closeness" and "inclusion".

Monsignor Dario E Vigano, the prefect of the Vatican's Secretariat for Communications in a written statement said, "Instagram will help recount the Papacy through images, to enable all those who wish to accompany and know more about Pope Francis' pontificate to encounter his gestures of tenderness and mercy."

The Pope's move came after the CEO and co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom had visited him at the Vatican in late February. Together they had discussed the power of photographs.

An elated Systrom wrote on Pope Francis joining Instagram, calling it an "incredible moment".

Systrom in a photo posted on his Instagram account said, "Your messages of humility, compassion and mercy will leave a lasting mark."

Pope Francis, who is already a social media star with 9 million followers on Twitter, announced his arrival on Instagram by his tweet on Saturday evening.
