If actresses are willing to wear a bikini in a movie, models are still conscious to walk the ramp in such outfits. So, lets explore such differentiating trends between Bollywood and modeling - the two fashion linked industries.
WHAT ALL does it takes a Bollywood actress to present herself in a bold image? Well, the easiest way is to wear a bikini. The trend does not sound new to actresses like Mallika Sherawat, Neha Dhupia, Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol, Amisha Patel and many more. They have become bold to show their bodies in bikini. However, if actresses are willing to wear a bikini in a movie, ramp models are still conscious to walk the ramp in such outfit. So, lets explore such differentiating trends between Bollywood and modeling – the two fashion linked industries.
“Today actresses are bolder than the models," says a prominent fashion designer Anita Dongre. She says, “Actresses are bold because if they are wearing a bikini in a movie they are grabbing more eye balls in comparison to a model that walks the ramp in such outfits. Besides this, in India the bikini market is not as flourishing as it is in other countries. The market here is very small. Even models are quite conscious in walking the ramp in bikini in front of so many cameras and people. And this is just because there is still some Indian culture and tradition that develops hesitation among models." Emphasising more on culture and popularity, the famous photographer Dabboo Ratnani says, "There are only few models in India who are comfortable in bikini but there are still many of them who being in modeling industry for so many years are very much conscious. Our country is following the western path but somewhere it is the culture that plays a very important role, so for many it is still quite difficult to present themselves in a bikini. However now actresses are having a daring nature, because somewhere it is all about that they want to show their well-maintained figure and gain popularity. "
Sexy and sultry Sheetal Menon, who has been in the modeling industry for quite a long time says, “In foreign countries there is a huge market of bikini, so there is more demand of models who can very well carry it. So models shape up their body according to it and have a well-toned figure. Even the concept of zero figures arose from there to make models look good wearing a bikini. However, in India neither there are any designer labelled bikinis nor models are too eager to walk the ramp wearing such a revealing outfit. However, this fashion has started to gear up because actresses are now promoting the bikini culture in the country. For this they are making there body very well toned and slim." Talking on the parallel lines, model Amanpreet Wahi sharing her personal experience says," When I did Gladrags it was must for me to wear a bikini and I did that. But if I am asked to wear a bikini today then I am totally uncomfortable. It’s itchy for some models to walk the ramp in bikini as there are cultural taboos and the western culture is not totally acceptable here." Further she says, “Indian actresses are going more for bikini in movies because for some it is an easy way to gain popularity. If an actress is coming in a bikini in a movie, then few months before the release there is a hype, which attracts audiences. " However, a debutant actress, Shweta Bharadwaj, of ’Mission Istanbul’ says, “It’s not a big deal wearing a bikini, if I am working for any of the big production houses. It is just because they can make you look as beautiful in a bikini as in a saree.” Well said Shweta!
