Bollywood has led the rapid growth of the Indian film Industry. But Inspite of having all the resources, the director almost always rely on copied ideas and remakes to make a film. Is it that they do not have any writers with original ideas
THE INDIAN film industry is undergoing many changes. India is the first country in the world to produce maximum number of films in a year. At the rate of 800 films a year, the cumulative consumer spending on filmed entertainment products in the country is estimated to be over 60 billion a year, of which the Hindi film industry itself attracts 40-50 per cent. Bollywood is changing at a rapid pace. It is the one of the most sought after industries for job today.
But what comparison you can make between the Hindi film industry and Hollywood? Actually, a comparison is required when there is a difference. Here, I am going to be a bit biased, not actually biased as a journo I have to use my right to reveal the truth.
Aren’t you thinking that Hindi film stories are already known to its viewers? From start to climax, Bollywood is becoming an expert in copying the ideas from Hollywood or from Tollywood. Most Hindi movies are copies or remakes of Hollywood or Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies. Why is it so? Is it that they do not have any writers, who can write original stories. Or may be copying is easier to do.
From Judwa - Suang Long Hui (twin brother- jackie chan) to Rang De Basanti - All My Sons (1948) and Jesus of Montreal). Hum Tum - Harry Met Sally... (1989) to Criminal -Copy of the Fugitive (1993). U Me aur Hum - The notebook and A Moment to Remember (korean) to Munnabhai MBBS - Patch Adams. Partner - Hitch to Ghajini (Remake Of Tamil Ghajini, which has been copied from Memento). All the above mentioned movies are a very short portion of a long list of such examples. Can’t Bollywood create its own identity? Today, India lacks nothing- neither talent nor technology. Inspite of that the directors do so because they are bored of producing new ideas or have become used to of copying habits?
Danny Boyle, a great Hollywood director has just come out with his film, Slumdog Millionaire. The story is completely based on the life of people living in slums of Mumbai, India. If a Hollywood director can think of something like this, why not a Bollywood director? I am now expecting a remake of Slumdog from Bollywood directors.
