Bollywood Shame: Film Stars celebrate at IIFA; skip their 'Right to Vote'
They sell us everything - from Tea to Shampoo; they take their stance in every social and political topics – from rape to riot; they call themselves citizens of India and are looked up by millions as role models. However Bollywood stars fail miserably to set an example in Loksabha Election 2014 and choose to attend an Award Show over exercising their ‘Right to Vote’. Will the organizers of the Award show answer to the country why they could have not organized the show after the voting season?

In a city like Mumbai, supposedly a Financial capital and home of the Richie riches but always had a very poor voter turnout, Bollywood stars could have set an example by coming forward to set a good example and calling people to get involved in the voting process. However, many stars in this election chose to attend IIFA over voting. 15th IIFA Weekend & Awards will be celebrated in Tampa Bay, Florida from 23rd – 26th April. This will be IIFA’s debut in the United States. This time around the event is sponsored.

There are many of celebs who chose IIFA over elections and decided to fly off to US without exercising their voting rights. They even could have wooed many of their fans to cast votes in sixth phase of election. The list includes:

Deepika Padukone:  Last year’s most successful Indian Actress Deepika Padukone who has over 5 million followers on twitter and could have wooed millions of her fans to the polling booth, however, chooses IIFA over the voting.

Anil Kapoor: The actor seems to have made Hollywood his home from the time his ‘blink and miss’ role in Mission Impossible 4. The star was seen celebrating at IIFA a day before he was scheduled to vote in Mumbai. Anil Kapoor has 257K followers in twitter and his last tweet talked about how much he is enjoying IIFA and nothing about urging people to vote.

Vir Dass: The actor is who adored by many and has taken social standings on many issues in the past, however, landed in US to attend IIFA two days before his city goes out to vote.

Priyanka Chopra: She can always be seen talking about Women safety and condemning rape many time in past, fails to create an example this time. She will be performing in IIFA and have flown down to US to attend the event.

The International (North) Indian Film Academy Awards is organised by Wizcraft International Entertainment. Some of the key partners of the IIFA US celebrations are: Videocon d2h, Tata Motors, Freedom Health Insurance, Lava Mobiles, Visit Tampa Bay Visitors and Convention Bureau, Visit Florida, Hillsborough County Commission, Jammu & Kashmir Tourism, Vishal Fashions, UST Global and Intuit.

The above mentioned celebrities were not in isolation. Most of the people from Indian Film Industry at the moment is in US for attending IIFA.

Election Commission who always turns up as a motivator for existing or upcoming voters, failed to stop such function which affect voting percent. Pawan Diwan, Media and Communication Department stated, “It’s a dubious law that unfortunately gives the election commission very little purview in such cases. While they can instruct private organizations to stay shut and give a paid holidays to their employees to facilitate the voting process, they supposedly have very little authority on events like IIFA, IPL or the bodies controlling them.” He also added, “We can only spread an awareness but cannot postpone events or control such organizations as it doesn't come under violation of model code of conduct.”

A few tweet updates from IIFA will give you a better picture of how the entertainment fraternity are walking on the read carpet rather than the dusty Mumbai streets.
