Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan becomes Maharashtra's Tiger Ambassador
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan will now use his charisma to protect tigers as he has accepted the proposal of Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, to be the tiger ambassador of the state.

On August 4, Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar had written letters to Amitabh Bachchan and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar inviting them to be the Tiger Ambassadors and creating awareness regarding conversation and protection of the endangered species as well as to boost tiger tourism.

The 72-year-old actor has accepted the Maharashtra government's invitation to become the brand ambassador for its ambitious Tiger Conservation projects.

The superstar sent a formal letter to the state government accepting its proposal and invite. In his letter to the forest minister Mungantiwar, he wrote, "Your expansive letter has educated me greatly on not just the Tiger Reserves within the state of Maharashtra but also the finer points on the importance of this campaign. I wish to accept your kind offer to render my services towards the state government's initiative for Tiger Conservation. This (letter) may kindly be treated as my consent to represent the state of Maharashtra as its Tiger Ambassador."

The tiger population in the state has increased from 103 in 2006 to 169 in 2010. Maharashtra has six tiger reserves including Melghat Tiger Reserve in Amravati, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Mungantiwar's home district of Chandrapur, Pench and Nagzira-Navegan Tiger Reserves near Nagpur, Sahyadri sanctuary, which includes Chandoli National Park and Koyna Sanctuary and Bor tiger reserve in Wardha district.
