THE WEEKEND was a viewing bonanza for sports fans as a number of major sporting events were underway.

The Barclays Premier League season started with the first round of fixtures. The very first day of the season produced some astounding results. Most noticeable and unexpected was the 6-1 thrashing of Everton by Arsenal. Arsenal who have been tipped to lose their place in the top four clubs in the country put on a good show to drub poor Everton. Everton manager David Moise looked on in disbelief as his team crumbled at home. Chelsea and Manchester United both registered hard fought home wins against Hull City and Birmingham respectively. Liverpool lost 2-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur whereas league big spenders Manchester City recorded an away win at Blackburn.

The US PGA Championship the last major of the year concluded at Hazeltine National in Minnesota. Yang Yong-eun's of South Korea became the first Asian player to win a major. Tiger woods who led the tournament till the final round threw away a two shot lead on the final day as Yang capitalised and registered a historic win. Tiger ended the year without major.

Andy Murray made a big statement for the upcoming US Open Tournament by winning the star studded Rogers Cup in Montreal. Once heading for defeat the Britton came back from a set down to beat Argentina's Juan Martin del potro 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. Murray is now the bookmakers for winning top prize in the US Open as world number one Roger Federer and number two Rafael Nadal were both ousted in the quarter final round of the tournament. The event also saw all the top eight seeds making the quarters of an ATP Tournament for the first time in 40 years.

The world athletics championship are still underway in Berlin but one man has already got all the attention. Jamaican Usain Bolt smashed his own world record in the 100m sprint to set a new time of 9.58 seconds in place of 9.69 seconds that he set in Beijing last year. American and defending champion Tyson Gay came in second to claim the silver in 9.71 seconds while former record holder Asafa Powell grabbed bronze with a time of 9.84 seconds.
