Book review - The Feminist Classroom: Dynamics of Gender, Race, and Privilege
The book "The Feminist Classroom: Dynamics of Gender, Race, and Privilege" describes how some educators, teachers, professors and students are transforming higher education for a diverse society and creating classrooms that are inclusive with virtues of multiculturalism.

The book, authored by Frances A. Maher and Mary Kay Thompson Tetreault, is multifaceted that deals with concepts of feminism, pedagogy, inclusion, multi-culturism, constructivism and democratic academy. The book dwells more on the issues of feminist academics, student diversity and designing of curricula inclusive of women, the marginalized and the minorities.

The authors of book have researched a lot before writing it by observing feminist-oriented classes and interviewed participating professors and students at six institutions ranging from predominantly white, liberal-arts colleges to a predominantly black, female liberal-arts school as well as the large ethnically diverse groups and research institutions.

The book published by Basic Books, describes in detail the relationships observed between teachers, students, course content, the academic institutions, and society in general along with providing glimpses of barriers to learning by girls.

The book, spread into over 250 pages, clarifies the concept of the 'pedagogies of positionality' and explains the instructional methods that promote more communal, empowering classroom experiences.

In short, the book provides deep insight in feminist pedagogies and a good source book for researchers and practitioners who wish to feminize education.
