Book Review: Journeys through our Classrooms
Edited by Denis Udall and Amy Mednick, "Journeys through our Classrooms" is a collection of essays, write-ups, reports and case stories in which teachers analyse and describe their experiences about learning expeditions which had lasted from one to a few weeks that have become popular in many schools in the West.

According the editors of and contributors to the book, the write-ups in the book published by Kendall Hunt Publishing Company, advocate that 'curriculum can be both thoughtfully designed by teachers and open to students choice and discovery; that it can address the major disciplines and essential skills as well as students' passions and interests; and that it can challenge both the mind and the heart'.

The contributors to the book who are the classroom practitioners in their 12 write-ups demonstrate that what teachers can do beyond textbooks and worksheets in form of academic expeditions to learn directly about the world and how it works through outward bound discovery approach. It is held that learning happens the best with meeting the challenges directly with requisite support by the teachers and the school.

The writings in the book show through investigations and discoveries in the real world outside the school provide the opportunities for teachers and students both to make learning exciting and active through discovery approach.

The language is lucid and not much laden with jargon or technical words and describes the practical approaches to ensure students' active participation in learning process in real situation. Since both the editors are associated with designing and execution of learning expeditions, the paperback of 160-odd pages has become readable and usable by the teachers and other educational functionaries.
