Book review: 'Leading Change in Your School' by Douglas B Reeves
Douglas B Reeves, a distinguished writer and researcher of US, in his book titled "Leading Change in Your School" presents many real-life examples of educational leaders who brought about significant changes in their schools.

A number of success stories in school leadership have been narrated in the book and the insights into the change process have been illustrated. According to the author, those who brought about remarkable changes in their schools took more or less four steps. These being: (a) Creating conditions for change; (b) Planning activities for change: (c) Implementing the change activities; and (d) Sustaining change.

The author holds that for creating conditions for change, a collective assessment of the present reality is done first, and it is successively followed by collective envisioning of the intended or changed reality; making efforts for the organisational change.

According to the author, the process of identification of activities for change helps in proper planning for the envisaged change. And, for sustaining change, a missionary zeal and a shared sense of greater good or a noble cause are created.

For bringing about change, the school leader dons the role of a coach. The author observes that effective coaching focuses on changing the performance of functionaries to fill the gap between knowing and doing and provide specific timely feedback.

At this juncture, when examination system has got vitiated, there is need for the schools to change their classroom practices towards formative evaluation and performance assessment, and the book offers the school leaders a valuable guidance in the change process.
