Book review: The best years of your life by Dr Miriam Stoppard
The book 'The best years of your life' by Dr Miriam Stoppard is a self help book to work as a handbook for elderly people to provide practical guidelines to live a happy and meaningful old age.

The book talks about the issues of physical fitness, sound food habits, social support system, positive relationships, mental health, common old age ailments, cures and similar other aspects of life when you have time for yourself.

It is well received book written in simple narrative with suggestions for maintaining a sound physical and mental health in the old age and lead a purposeful retired life. The health and hygiene issues in the middle and old age have been discussed in depth with illustrations.

Following the advice given in the book spread in 300 odd pages, old people can enjoy their later years of life to the fullest. The author of the book makes you think that old age is the time to get most of ones life and living.

Stoppard says, "The best years of your life are not the uncertain teens when you are struggling with the world and your place in it. Nor are they your thirties and forties when you are chasing your success, making money and raising children. The best years your life are those wonderful decades after you are established yourself, after you have gained both wisdom and appreciation of the pleasures of life."

After reading the book, I got motivated to write an acrostic poem which goes as follows:

HAPPY

H: Have a philosophy of life with a positive and practical outlook

A: Adopt an encouraging positive approach

P: Plan your time with new interests and hobbies

P: Posture to be deliberately and consciously maintained

OLD

O: Old age beyond 65 years to be taken as a golden time of life

L: Looking after one's joints and micro-muscles with daily simple exercises

D: Diabetics checks to be undertaken every few months

AGE

A: Attending to one's physical comforts to make more of daily activities and security

G: Grandparental role of reliving childhood experiences with grandchildren

E: Exercises of legs and feet to aid blood circulation

The research has proved that the most important forms of intellectual growth can continue through out one's lifetime. Although, one's short term memories may diminish in old age but the ability to make judgments and deal with complex issues can be maintained through reading, discussions and interactions.

It has been rightly said that the experience backed by intellectual curiosity and active social involvement can keep the old persons minds keen and receptive.
