Book review: Visual Research Methods in Educational Research
With the smart phones, tablets and laptops with cameras becoming common with teachers and students, the photography and videography have become are the new tools being used a instructional and research purposes. However, use of visual data for research has not caught up yet in many countries.
One of reason for non-existent of serious visual research in education has been the lack of literature and research guidebook on the emergent  methodology for which a mobile camera can be quite handy.

In such a scenario, the book "Visual Research Methods in Educational Research" through the edited articles, write-ups, over-views  and research studies using visual data and visual research techniques bridges the gap in the literature and training in emergent research methods of analysing the visual data captured with a digital camera.

Have you noticed there is a burgeoning take up of visual research in education? Are you considering using visual research as part of your next research project or revitalising your research methods course?

The book, published by Palgrave Macmillan of UK and spread in 280 odd pages, combines both theoretical underpinning  the  visual research approaches for the researchers around four themes such as images of schooling, performing pedagogy, power and representation and ethical issues in educational visual research.

The book can find application as an alternative methodology across various disciplines under Social Sciences besides the educational research. The trainings and refresher courses on research methodologies in social sciences  requires inclusion of visual research in modern times and the book can work as the handbook for the trainers and researchers both. Recently, I drew strength from the book to organize a training and classroom research on creating a photo-essay. I recommend this book to be the part of the university libraries and for personal possession of educational researchers as well as action researchers.
