Books embody the diversity of human ingenuity: UNESCO Chief Azoulay on World Book Day
Jaipur has been witnessing quite a few events to popularise book reading ahead of the World Book Day, April 23, under the ages of a leading local newspaper. The observance is also known as World Book and Copyright Day which is coordinated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.

It was in 1995 that the UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April. The date coincides with the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

On the occasion of the observance, UNESCO Chief Audrey Azoulay, in her message said, "In these turbulent times, books embody the diversity of human ingenuity, giving shape to the wealth of human experience, expressing the search for meaning and expression we all share, that drive all societies forward. Books help weave humanity together as a single family, holding a past in common, a history and heritage, to craft a destiny that is shared, where all voices are heard in the great chorus of human aspiration."

According to the UN, the 24th edition of World Book and Copyright Day will celebrate literature and reading while focusing particularly on the importance of enhancing and protecting Indigenous languages.

"As a vector of knowledge, books bring people together around a story and a common heritage while revealing their specificities through different cultures, identities and languages. The focus on this topic is fully in line with the celebration of the International Year of the Indigenous Languages," it added.

This year, World Book Capital is Sharjah, United Arab Emirates wherein the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers and libraries, will meet for various events around the year.
