The last thing Vijender Singh could have expected was the confession by his boxer friend, Ram Singh that 'he and Vijender' took drugs for the sake of 'adventure'. The revelation has taken the Indian sporting fraternity by storm. Ram Singh was Vijender's roommate in the National Institute of Sports in Patiala (NIS). The NIS has henceforth decided to expel Ram Singh, from NIS, which is considered as the Mecca of Indian sports.
Indian sportsman, Yogeshwar Dutt have come out in the open and supported the Indian Olympian Vijender. He is hopeful that the pugilist will not be proven guilty. “We have never seen or heard about the boxer being involved in such acts. I felt very bad when his name cropped up, as it is going to have a negative impact on the youngsters,” Dutt told NNIS.
There are chances that the National Anti-Doping Agency may ask Vijender to come for a dope test. National boxing coach, Gurbax Singh Sandhu stated that Vijender has undergone a number of dope tests in the past and has always come out clean. He considers him a more disciplined person. Vijender's brother, on the similar lines, said that it must be some conspiracy to defame his brother. He said that his brother will come out clean.
Vijender came into the limelight when 26 kg of heroin worth Rs 130 crore was recovered from NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon’s house. During the investigation, Vijender's name also cropped up, making the case a high profiled one. There is no denying the fact that Vijender was in touch with main accused Kahlon, as revealed by his telephone details. Apart from this, it has also been found out when the raid took place at Kahlon's house an SUV was found near the house, which was in fact registered in the name of Vijender's wife.
Vijender told The Times of India, “Ram Singh is a good friend and helps me in training. He took the keys in my absence. I tried calling him after learning about all this but his phone was switched off. I meet a lot of people who can claim to know me. I have never done anything wrong. I am ready for an investigation. I am sure the truth will come out.”
Ram Singh has been questioned almost every day, as he also admitted that they both tried drugs thinking it was a food supplement, which was given by Kahlon. Ram Singh had also met Kahlon in the past. But, Vijender has stated that he does not know Kahlon.
