BP engineers go for 'static kill' of oil well in Gulf
The company engineers are planning to pump heavy drilling mud and then finally put cement into the Macondo well early this week. This will kill the well for good and this effort might bring out any possible leakage that is to be plugged.
THE VOLATILE oil well of the British Petroleum (BP) in the Gulf of Mexico will finally be sealed by cement from both the sides as a final remedial measure, in few days.

The company engineers are planning to pump heavy drilling mud and then finally put cement into the Macondo well early this week. This will kill the well for good and this effort might bring out any possible leakage that is to be plugged.

This effort of engineers is also known as a static kill. This static kill comes as the BP oil well blew out in the gulf spilling some 5 million barrels of oil and killing 11 rig workers. This spill has created an environmental fiasco that is going to affect lives of animals for years to come.

There have been many attempts to stop the leak as the spill has become some 100 days old. The attempts met repeated failures as typhoons and depressions made it hard to continue.

Recently technicians managed to install a tight-fitting cap that eventually stopped the leak for the time.

Scientists are studying the phenomenon and what its future implications can be as this leak was one of its kind. The sea food industry is the worst affected as they are unsure about the effect that the chemicals used to dissolve the thick oil slick will have on the aquatic life.
