Earlier the terminology Breaking news, used rarely, was given to underline the importance of a hitherto unheard news, one which was of urgent public significance and required the attention of all the public.
A FEW days back, while watching a private news channel, I had come across a breaking news ticker which showed, “Sachin has changed his bat” and that “he will play with a heavier bat in the upcoming series.”
This just shows the changing significance of the term 'Breaking News'. Earlier this terminology, used rarely, was given to underline the importance of a hitherto unheard news, one which was of urgent public significance and required the attention of all the public.
But now a days, all news channels, use this term to showcase even trivial matters. It seems that they have started using the term as a bait for a larger audience, even when there is no news important enough to justify it being called as 'Breaking News'.
What the channels do not realise is that frivolous usage of this term, also effects their credibility and showcases them as frivolous too .Let's wait and watch, when they would realise this and what more such new concepts we might have to come across.
