British accent puzzles iPhone
A report says that the new iPhone is not able to understand British accents properly and it provides some puzzling answers to queries. The report has been published based on the complaints of iPhone users in Britain.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY has both pros and cons, positive and negative aspects as well. Almost a similar thing has happened with the iPhone, which after having crated a sensation around the world was unveiled a couple of months back in India. According to a London newspaper, Daily Telegraph report, a new voice-recognition search tool for iPhone has some faults. The free application allows iPhone users to use the Google search engine with their voice.
The report says that the new iPhone tool is not able to understand British accents properly and it provides some puzzling answers to queries asked. The report has been published based on the complaints of iPhone users in Britain. Based on the users’ complaints, Daily Telegraph says that the voice-recognition search tool, mistook the word ’iPhone’ for words like ’Einstein’, ’sex’ and ’kitchen sink’.
In fact, on its website the company has provided a video demonstration of the Google Mobile App which shows a US engineer successfully asking for pictures of the Golden Gate as well as cinema timetables and temperature conversions. Besides, the website has also provided a link to a video showing people with British, Irish and Chinese accents asking for relatively complicated searches, with apparent success.
However, British iPhone users have less luck, when a Scottish spoke the word ’iPhone’ into the application he was offered a porn website after it mistook his search for ’sex’. Another user from Surrey (south of London) who spoke with a Kent accent was offered ’myspace’ and ’Einstein’ other options for ’iPhone’. For the word ’iPhone’ a Welsh accent was given the suggestions ’gorillas’ and ’kitchen sink’. When a user with Kentish accent asked to find the nearest pizza take away, the application came back with something about volcanoes. The same user asked the application to find nearest pub, it gave a link to some kind of weird dating website.
The comments left by iPhone owners on the official application’s website confirm the problem. One of the user identified as Kevin wrote, ’Awesome job Google. Only problem is every time I say the word ’fish’ it registers as ’sex’.
On its website, Google points out that the new voice search system is currently available only in US English. One British user, Edward Parsons, says on the website’s comments board: "This is fantastic, except for the North American accent bias. It actually works pretty well, but I have to disguise my (North London) accent with a terrible folksy Texan tourist voice to get results. I can see this is going to be the source of much amusement and confusion."
Now British users are reportedly trying to put on their best American accent to work the new application properly. The limitation of technology has annoyed the British iPhone users and it is not surprising at all because an iPhone is after all a man-made gadget and it can’t work beyond its limitations. Let us when Google overcomes the problem and makes the use of iPhone’s new application smooth for the British accent people.
