British Airways back to Kolkata: moment of happiness or worry?
Kolkata is gearing up to welcome back British Airways and five other international airlines. While everyone is overjoyed at the news they must also concentrate on the issues that had sent the British Airways packing from Kolkata previously.

WHEN THE British Airways closed operations from Kolkata, everyone was apprehensive about the loss of the aviation industry in the East. However, they should have acknowledged the fact that British Airways (BA) has a tendency to come and go from Kolkata as and when they like, given the past. They started in Kolkata during the British rule in 1932 and have left the city a number of times.

The last time it took place was in March 29, 2009 when yet again, the last flight took off from the Netaji

Bose International Airport. Now they have decided to return again to the land of Tagore but is it good news? Given its impulsive nature, they can decide to leave the city as and when they want. The real good news for Kolkata, however, is that apart from BA, five other international airlines have decided to try out Kolkata.

As clarified by the Kolkata Airport Advisory Committee Chairman, Sougata Roy, airlines from Dubai, Mauritius, Japan and three other countries have shown interest to test the waters of Kolkata aviation. The flipside of the good news is that with international airlines interested in Kolkata, the standard of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport has to really go up. The reason why British Airways cannot sustain Kolkata is due to the low profitability, security issues and low passenger load in the past. Every one of the factor can be improved upon to keep the international airways happy as well as the passengers happy.

For that the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport needs to bring on their A game. As reported in samachar.com, Sougata Roy said that the modernisation of the airport is going strong and it would finish by March 2012. However, the airport would be fully operational only after June 2012. Thus, while it is good news for business in India but they must also be careful about the factors that always sends these airways back to their home.
