In a bid to give Indian students better access to global educational opportunities, the British Council has launched its first ever IELTS Scholarship Award in the country.
IN A bid to give Indian students better access to global educational opportunities, the British Council has launched its first ever IELTS Scholarship Award in the country. The competition for the award will remain open till the end of July.
Addressing a Press conference here this afternoon, Kevin McLaven, the British Council IELTS chief in India said that in line with British Council’s mission to promote the global sharing of knowledge and ideas, it would select eight students from India, each of whom would receive an award of Rs. 3,00,000 towards the cost of tuition fees. In order to qualify for the award, an eligible applicant must have an IELTS test score of 6.5. He/she will have to write an essay of 300 words and give a face-to-face presentation.Among the prominent British Council representatives present on the occasion, in different capacities, were Ms. Devi Maghera (Deputy Country Exams Manager), Mr. Manish Joshi (Head Examinations), Mr. Vishal Bhasin (Head Operations, Projects and Finance), Mr Vipin Pachouri and Mr. Balvinder Singh (both Marketing Managers, Nothern India), and Mr. Rajesh Sahni (Senior Marketing Consultant, Jalandhar region).
Mr. McLaven, who is also First Secretary, Education Services, British High Commission said, “the British Council is committed to building lifelong relationships and enabling young people to achieve their life goals.”“By launching the IELTS scholarship Award, the British Council is demonstrating its commitment to supporting young people in realizing their aspirations. By giving them access to international educational opportunities, we hope to benefit both individuals and the countries from which they come, while at the same time promoting higher education links between UK and India,” he added.He also informed that the British Council is also launching the Award in three other Asian countries with a total investment of 60,000 pounds.Elaborating further the IELTS chief said that Award winners would begin a full time post-graduate programme at any overseas university which uses IELTS as a part of its admission requirements and as a reliable measure of English language proficiency. Since IELTS is accepted by over 6,000 institutions in 125 countries worldwide, university choice is wide.It may be mentioned that the IELTS is the world’s leading English language test designed to evaluate ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation worldwide. In the US alone, over 2500 institutions and programmes accept IELTS. Along with the rise in the number of US institutions accepting IELTS, the number of IELTS test takers globally increased to over 1.4 million in 2009.
