BSNL registers its first loss since inception
Ministry of state for Communication and IT Sachin Pilot told Rajya Sabha in a written reply that BSNL garnered Rs 8885.67 crore in revenue, while it earned Rs. 9541.52 crore from mobile services during the year 2009-2010.
AS PER government reports, the state owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) registered its first ever loss since it was formed. The losses amounted at Rs 1,800 crore in 2009-10.

Total revenue generated over the financial year 2009-10 is Rs. Rs 18,427.18 crore from both landline and mobile services. Ministry of state for Communication and IT Sachin Pilot told Rajya Sabha in a written reply that BSNL garnered Rs 8885.67 crore in revenue, while it earned Rs. 9541.52 crore from mobile services during the year 2009-2010.


Pilot also mentioned that loss of Rs 1,822.65 crore is the first ever loss in the history of BSNL in the financial year 2009-10, he said that BSNL had earned Profit since its start off in October 2000 (2000-01) up to the financial year 2008-09.


As on 30th September 2010, the number of internet connections provided by BSNL & MTNL (another state-owned telecom firm) in Delhi and Mumbai circles where it operates was 14.35 million, of these BSNL had 11.96 million subscribers, while MTNL had 2.39 million Internet subscribers.


It was also told that Department of Telecom has received an amount of Rs. 110 crore in penalty from telecom operators for activating services of unverified customers.
