TO GIVE a major boost to its sales and marketing workforce strength, state run telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is going to recruit 10,000 new employees. This new bulk recruitment will push up the sales and marketing workforce of the company to 25,000. It has already redeployed and relocated around 10,000 workers from other divisions.

Here it is worth noting that this new move undertaken by BSNL is contrary to the Sam Pitroda Committee recommendation, which suggested BSNL to cut down the number of employees by 100,000 from the current number of 350,000 employees. Staff unions are already opposing this decision of new recruitment and threatening that they may go on a strike if the decision gets implemented.

Due to fierce competition in the market the profit volume of BSNL is already spiraling downward and with a market share of 12 per cent, now BSNL is standing at fourth position in the telecom race. Moreover, the company is in severe financial turbulences, due to the payment of whopping Rs 3,700 crore in pay arrears and is most likely to close the accounts of the current financial year, showing staggering losses.

Market analysts are blaming BSNL, for pathetically failing in utilising its first mover advantage in 3G space. They believe that BSNL could sky rocket their profit margin if it could properly spread 3G services in the country.
