Buddha Purnima: Understanding the ABC of Buddhism
This year, Buddha Purnima festival is being celebrated on May 10. The festival is meant to spread the timeless teachings of right conduct, unconditional love, minimal desires, compassion and tolerance to alleviate human suffering and build a truly peaceful and humane society.

According to Lord Buddha, desires are the cause of strife and enlightenment dawns when one harbours no desires. In other words, the lesser the desires, the happier the person.

Here is the ABC of Buddhism.

Achieving true wisdom, compassion and freedom from suffering is aim of human life
Belief in law of change and impermanence
Chain of causation and interconnectedness of all things
Decreasing desires reduces suffering or dukkha for all and leads to liberation
Evolving oneself to transcend ego to gain greater harmony with things and be happy

Here are my haiku on desire –the basic cause of sufferings.

Worldly gains, desires,
Bring they strife, pain and sorrow.
Desires destroy peace.
If you chase desires,
If you chase sensual pleasures,
Life will be painful.
You be desireless.
You will live well life and death.
You will be blissful.
Harbour not desires.
Desires make you subservient.
They breed bondage.
When we have desires,
We compete to fulfill them
To make life a war.
