Building Self-Esteem in Children: Book Review
The book "Building Self-Esteem in Children", authored by Patricia H. Berne and Louis M. Savary, is a practical manual for both parents and teachers for better development of children in their formative years. According to the authors of the book, building children's self-esteem is a necessary pre-condition to effective learning and positive child development.
The 62-page book clearly defines self-esteem and deems it as important to children as the air they breathe. Therefore, a powerful vision of the force of love that inspires self-confidence in children is necessary among care-givers and teachers to be effective as parents and professionals.

Terming self-esteem as daily food for sound emotional health of children, the authors warn that that a lack of self-esteem and positive and supportive experiences could interfere with a child's ability to learn and relate.

The book describes 66 practical principles that have been brought to life with true stories, to help parents and educators foster an atmosphere in which self-esteem can flourish. The book written in a plain and simple language makes it a light reading and provides sound pieces of advice and actions for building self-image and self-concept among children in their formative years. 

The book has been divided into seven well defined chapters Titled Building Relationships; Being Non-Threatening Nurturing Success; Bridging a Loving World; Fostering the Freedom to Choose; Dealing with Strong Emotions; and Inviting the Affirming Spirit.

The Indian edition of the book, published by the Continuum Publishing Company of New York, has been brought out by Better Yourself Books, Bombay. The book is a must for parents, educators, trainers and teachers for developing self-esteem of children so that they love to learn and live.

Currently, with the emphasis on life-skills education, the book has assumed a greater value. The book is a must for schools and teacher training institutions, since it offers practical advice for better support to children in their learning and growth as good persons with positive attitudes and human values.
