Busted gang of identity thieves splurged on hotels, iPhones
A tech-savvy gang in the US, numbering more than 100, which stole credit card details and then went on a shopping spree has been caught in what has been called the largest such bust ever. Those scammed include people in China, the US and Europe.

IN 1995, when Sandra bullock’s movie, ‘The Net,’ hit the theatres it was questioned again and again as to how can the identity of a person be stolen and then erased. It was an intriguing and unbelievable concept but now after the internet boom, such a possibility doesn’t appear that alien. New York Times has reported that a gang of 111 people who had been stealing other people's identities all around the world and robbing them, has been busted. In what is being called one of the most widespread burglaries, tourists were fooled and their identity was stolen to rob them out of their money.

The identity theft ring spread to a number of different regions such as China, Europe and the Middle East, and victimized thousands. While 111 people have been arrested for the crime there are still others who are yet to be found. As per records with the authorities bank tellers, restaurant workers and other service employees were involved in the theft from foreign tourists and residents by stealing  their credit card. An estimated $13 million was been spent by the thieves by using someone else’s identity.

District Attorney Richard Brown in the New York borough of Queens called it the largest fraud case he'd seen in his two decades in office. According to a report in dailymail.co.uk all the people will be tried for enterprise corruption, theft and grand larceny. In what appears to be a carefully constructed felony at least three bank employee, waiters were involved in getting the credit card numbers, which is also called skimming. After getting the number they would sell them online. The people who would buy them would use the number and make fake visa cards and then use them to buy stuff.

The fraudsters spent a lot on hi-tech gadgets such as iPhone, iPad and then sold things they had bought through false identities to earn profit. Investigative officers said that fake IDs and visa card were also used to live in luxurious hotels and to procure expensive Gucci and Louis Vuitton bags. The detectives said that whoever used these cards were technologically very adept and they knew their way around technology. It is sad that they did not use their knowledge for better use.
