AFTER INDIA’S PATHETIC performance in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup this year and Sachin Tendulkar’s insinuations, Coach Greg Chappell has put in his papers. Rather, he should have been expelled for creating differences between the senior players and the other team members. As a coach, Chappell should have given his feedback to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rather than speaking in public.
Who should be the next coach is the biggest question. I feel the system should change. Why can we not have a CEO like a corporate house with project managers under him? The project managers will specialize in bowling, batting, fielding, physical and mental health and will report to the CEO. Most importantly the CEO must be from India, as he is expected to understand our players better. Players like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Azharuddin, who have earned accolades and are of international repute, can do a better job than those from other countries.
I also believe that changing teams and coach will not bring about the much-needed overhaul. It is the structure as a whole and the basic attitude of the team members that needs reorientation. Ours is a country of one billion-plus and we can be sure that there are many more Tendulkars and Gavaskars. The necessity is to spot and train them.
