Bypoll for Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency cancelled
The bypoll to the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency have been cancelled. The Election Commission while cancelling the polls has said that the situation is not conducive for holding elections.

The seat from Anantnag constituency had been left vacant after PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti resigned from the seat as MP and took over as the Chief Minister of the state. Anantnag was scheduled to go to polls on April 12 but polling had to be deferred till May 25 due to the situation being volatile in Anantnag. Mehbooba Mufti's brother, Mufti Tassaduq Hussain is the PDP's candidate from the seat.

"In view of the prevailing ground situation and non-availability of sufficient security forces, the Commission is of the considered view that peaceful, free and fair poll is not feasible on May 25, as scheduled, though some political parties have asked for the same," the EC's order read.

This comes just a day after the Centre said that of the required 75,000 paramilitary personnel for poll duty, it would be able to send only half of them. The EC had requested for deployment of 75,000 paramilitary personnel in Kashmir to ensure that the polls are conducted without any violence.

A new date as to when the polls will now be held has not been announced.

Former CM of the state, Omar Abdullah, while terming the cancellation of the polls as 'depressing', tweeted, "It's depressing to see how far we have regressed in Kashmir from the highs of the Assembly polls of 2014 to the cancelled election of 2017."
