Cabinet appoints Lt Gen V K Singh as the next Army Chief
Lieutenant General V K Singh will take over as the 26th Army Chief here in New Delhi today.He succeeds General Deepak Kapoor to take over the office of 1.13 million personnel strong Army for next two years.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL V K Singh has been appointed as the next army chief. He will take over as the 26th Army Chief in New Delhi on March 30,2010. He succeeds General Deepak Kapoor to take over the office of 1.13 million personnel strong Indian Army for next two years. The newly appointed Army Chief has been a part of the War against Pakistan in 1971 and the Indian Peace keeping force in Sri Lanka in mid-80s. He has been an instructor for the Indian Military Training Team at Bhutan Headquarters.
The present GOC-in-C (General Officer Commanding in Charge) of Eastern Command is the senior most officer in infantry to have such a wide experience in counter-insurgency operations. In light of his contribution to the Indian Army, General Singh is a proud recipient of 'Param Vishisht Seva Medal' , 'Ati Vishisht Seva Medal' and 'Yudh Seva Medal'. He is one of the honorary ADCs to the President of India.
As the new Army Chief, he has many strategic and operational challenges to face; the most important being the long delayed artillery modernization program which seems to have paralyzed the firepower capabilities of the forces.
