Call of the Wild is Coming...Soon!
The latest presentation of this classic book offers a very modern approach and some big Hollywood names. Jana Kondelova gives the inside scoop without giving too much away about the early days of this production.

The upcoming remake of Jack London's classic book turned filmCall of the Wild promises to be just such an opportunity. Perhaps the most famous is the 1935 version starring iconic Oscar Award winners Clark Gable and Loretta Young. Jana Kondelova is a key member of the production staff bringing the story into the modern era. While the film boast big Hollywood names like Oscar Nominee Harrison Ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Fugitive) as John Thornton, Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, Selfie) as Mercedes and Dan Stevens

(Beauty and the Beast, Legion) as Hal, it's the state of the art approach to the film that has so many, including Kondelova, excited about the film which is currently in production.

As the audience, we get the benefit of being wowed by a film, especially when both the story and the visual language of the film are striking. For professionals like Jana, the process is much more incremental and calculated. Finding the stages upon which sets are built, housing construction and set decoration, and in the case of this film, daily communication and cooperation with the VFX department is an essential part of preparing for filming.

Jana remarks, "While I've been involved with shows like TNT's The Last Ship and ABC's Station 19 that required effects, this is my first experience with this type of movie that utilizes them often and in a very state of the art manner. I have always been interested in effects and special effects. This particular project uses a hybrid of Technoprops and VR production." The army of professionals involved in creating the believable magic on the screen for Call of the Wild is substantial. Jana concedes that any void in her exposure to the integration of modern technology in film has been amply filled.

The dichotomy of working on a film like Call of the Wild which requires such attention to minute details is that the time passes quite quickly. The level of focus in television is well-known in the production world; that same focus is amplified for a film such as this. This necessitates keeping a cool head, starting with Kondelova and the production team. She notes, "Even details which you already know are likely not that important, you still make sure to check two or three times to ensure you are not mistaken. For me, the hours on this production fly by. It's unbelievable! Immediately when I walk into the studio my day starts like a rollercoaster and does not stop till I am laying down in my bed. Even though it is a tough project, people here are very calm and always easy going. This is very important when you work long hours. You just have to take it easy sometimes but still work hard."

Whether she's going over scripts and contracts or helping the VFX department, Jana finds herself blissfully tackling a mountain of work all while thoroughly enjoying the process. Some people thrive in stressful situations, likely because to them it is a testing ground for them to prove themselves. Call of the Wild is scheduled for release in December 2019.
