Campaign to protect and conserve house sparrows launched in UP's Gorakhpur Mandal
Under the auspices of Go Green Save Earth Foundation to mark the World Sparrow Day, a five-month long campaign to save and care for house sparrows has been launched in Gorakhpur block of Uttar Pradesh, informed social activist Vimlesh Nigam. The World sparrow Day will be observed across the globe on March 20.

The campaign was launched by the Chief Forest Conservator of Gorakhpur Mandal on March 1 for free distribution sparrow houses and feeding trays since the summer has started early this year. A few sparrow houses and feeding trays were put on the trees of around forest conservation office followed by a door-to-door contact for creating awareness for protection of house sparrows which are fast disappearing in urban areas.

According to the official website of the observance, the house sparrow was once the most common bird in the world, but in the past few years, this bird has been on the decline over much of its natural range, both in the urban and rural habitats.

"The decline of the house sparrow is an indicator of the continuous degradation the environment around us is facing. It is also a warning bell that alerts us about the possible detrimental effects on our health and wellbeing. We need to know the health risks of the increasing amount of microwave pollution and what is decimating the population of the house sparrow, which co-existed with us, so that we can estimate the effect on all forms of life, including ours," adds the website .

Furthermore, the conservation of the house sparrow and its habitat will also help save much of the common biodiversity, which shares the habitat of the house sparrows.  The goal of the observance is to collectively inspire others to join the celebrations and to get as many people as possible involved in the conservation of house sparrows and their habitat across the planet.
