Can a beautiful body fetch you a white collar job?
India has overtaken China and the US in performing cosmetic surgeries as young men and women in their early 20's have become obsessed with looking beautiful - a qualification they believe will fetch them white collar jobs.

A BEAUTIFUL body is the new obsession for young Indians and they are even considering it as an essential part of their curriculum vitae. The botox injections and silicone implants are now old therpies to look young and beautiful. Now they concentrate more on surgeries such as facial rejuvenation, and body contouring etc.

Increasing wealth and fascination with celebrity culture is fuelling the urge to look more beautiful. Beauty is also believed an advantage in the competitive white-collar workplace. People in search of jobs prefer to submit their amazing photographs with their applications. This year India has performed more cosmetic surgeries than China and the US. It is now becoming number two on the global list of cosmetic surgeries.

The market is now worth some $4.5 billion. The leading cosmetic institutes are giving reasonable discount and inviting large segments of young professional at Nip and Tuck vacation in India. These money minting surgeries and vacations also promise to get a highly paid job.

“I think these surgeries are fit for jobs like modelling, advertisement industries and fashion world. The good appearance is also necessary to take advantage in fierce competition. However I believe that the most of young professionals still use make-up rather than the surgeries,” said Kunika Schdeva, an executive director with a placement agency. “The job hunting is not a beauty contest, talent and working capabillity should remain the most important factors during employment,” added Ms Schdeva.

“What about the people who cannot afford these cosmetic surgeries to look beautiful. Will they not be eligible for high paid jobs,” asked Jyothi Randhawa, an executive with a call center. She said this practice should be stopped, wherever companies are adopting this system government must come forward to take action.

The cosmetic surgery departments in most of public hospitals are now busiest places for appointment. The most patients are in their in early 20s and 30s. The four most common procedures are doubled eyelid surgey, liposuction, nose jobs, and body contouring. There are numerous illegitimate beauty and cosmetic clinics all over India and 70% cosmetic procedures take place in unlicensed salons, some even offer face and body slimming injections.

“The days are not far when parents will start to save money for their daughters not only for dowry but also for cosmetic surgeries. People should not only pursue external beauty but also internal ability too. Today, boys are joining girls in the race of attractiveness, where is India heading to, I fail to understand,” concluded Ms Sachdeva.
