Can life skills-based education be made viable in educating adolescent children in India?
In the first decade of the 21st century, quite a few projects of life skills-based education (LSBE) were undertaken for piloting and experimentation and many of them were supported by various agencies of the United Nations and other civil society organisations.

Even the UN Decade for Sustainable Development has batted for LBSE. But unfortunately, the mainstream education has not integrated any of the components of LSBE initiatives piloted successfully.

It has been found that LSBE that focuses on developing personal life skills during the adolescent period to live a meaningful life with as empowered and responsive individual is effective for right kind of development of adolescent boys and girls since it tries to combine learning and life.

The process-oriented LSBE with emphasis on the skills like self-awareness, self-reflection, critical-creative thinking, self-management and coping, problem solving and interpersonal skills and communication skills, aims 'to help children reach their full personal potentials and to prepare them for the challenges of everyday life' as rational human being capable of taking decisions and owning them up.

It has been articulated that the expected learning outcomes of LSBE should the age-grade include a combination of knowledge, values, attitudes and skills with a particular emphasis on those skills that are related to life skills that have been tried out and crystallised by educating children in the age group 11 to 16 years.

Since, the formulation of National Policy on Education is still under process, the policy could include the components of the processes and skills that have thrown up by the experiments on LSBE for educating children in Classes VI to X. The subjects of social sciences, life sciences and physical education have scope to include life skills in them. One trimester in each of three mentioned subjects can be dedicated to LSBE for each grade of upper primary and high school education, I feel.
