Can Mumbai become international financial centre?
For Mumbai to become global financial centre, it has to welcome global standards. The city has to raise itself above the self-interest of the politicians to be a global city. It should be more investment-friendly with proper infrastructure at place
MUMBAI IS the financial capital of India. We plan to make Mumbai financial hub of the East. Can this dream ever materialise? It can, but it is not that easy. Just placing good infrastructure, using modern technology etc, doesn’t guarantee the desired position. To achieve that standard, the city has to raise itself above self-interest and regionalism.
To achieve the global financial tag, the city has to accept the global spoken language, English. It has to raise its standard to the global level. The state has to become investment friendly. This will directly contribute to the state’s capital. Moreover, every now and then, local politicians come up with issues that damage the image of the city. If the city politicians want the city to make its position on the world map, then they will have to accept the world standards.
And now, all of a sudden to capture the attention of the masses, the politicians have propagated the agenda of Marathi. According to our politicians, each one in the state should be able to speak the regional language. Now, what difference does it make to the state as long as the person generates revenues for the government and doesn’t disturbs the harmony of the state? But by promoting this type agenda, the politicians are supporting regionalism, which can cut the supporting hands to the city.
In every financial centre, there are handful of other cities, which provide the necessary support. In case of Mumbai, this role can be played by Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. Now, for these cities to support Mumbai, they need to have a common language platform. However, the present situation speaks a different story.
Maharashtrian politicians strongly support the local language; they have also recommend to employ the local people in various companies, irrespective of their merit. However, this will create hollow pillars on which the edifice of the financial centre has to be build. According to the potential leaders of the state, all the office document should be converted into 100 per cent Marathi. In such a case, a person with lack of proficiency over the Marathi language will always be at a loss to the company, as he would not be able to put his expertise into any use. The ’political party’ has also demanded to write all the signboards of all the shops in the city in the local language. Isn’t this another measure to violate the global standards of the city?
There is a step by step approach to achieve global standards. Firstly, accept the language. Then provide the necessary facilities for money generation. Then develop good infrastructure for the city. This will make optimum utilisation of the available resources. Good public transport facility will reduce pollution to the great extent. This is because more people will shift to public transport and keep there automotives at home.
It is only the wide vision for the future and acceptance of the changing environment that can fasten the development rate in the city
