Can the youth bail us out?
The utterances of Varun Gandhi in Philbit was shocking ? is this what the future of the country holds for us? People should pull up their socks and come in hordes to the polling booths to seal the fates of unwanted candidates
THE 2009 General Elections is promising to turn out to be an exceptional one. It was expected that the youngsters already into politics by virtue of their family links would show the way and take over the reins from the elders. But the utterances of Varun Gandhi in Philbit were shocking – is this what the future of the country holds for us? His party, the BJP, would certainly not be amused. The candidature of Sanjay Dutt is still in the doldrums and movie personalities are emerging on the scene as show stealers. Their commitment towards governance has never been impressive and to expect the tiger to change its stripes is as unrealistic as asking the cat to bark like a dog.

And then there are too many contenders for the post of the Prime Minister. There is a growing feeling that the country would be in for a fractured mandate, which means that there would have to be forced alliances. As it is, we are witnessing the clamour to get in the driving seat and even the CPIM is expressing a secret desire to be in the ruler’s seat. The post election scenario would not bring too much comfort to the electorate unless the young ones really pull up their socks and come in hordes to the polling booth to press the button on the EVM and seal the fates of unwanted ones. Everyone knows who the Ravanas are, the tainted ones who continue to have their way since they bank on the terror complex of the common man. We are working out methods to combat external terrorism by installing sophisticated detection equipments but when it comes to the daily dose of terror that one group unleashes on another at the slightest pretext, it paints a gory picture.

The contenders for the post of the Prime Minister has its share of women but if the verdict emerges as 200 + 200 + 143 or thereabout to account for the 543 Parliamentary seats, the situation would be grim because any combination would be steeped in instability we would have to be mentally be prepared for a mid-term exercise at every moment.

Under the circumstances, only the newcomers to the Electoral College can bail us out. The media has taken the initiative and is trying its best to bring to focus the importance of exercising ones democratic rights. The first and second time voters, the young men and women who really want a clean government, could cause major upsets in the calculations of psephologists. Let us hope they take the correct step.
