Canada to host UN's official celebration of World Environment Day
For this year's World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5 with the theme "Connecting People to Nature", Canada has been chosen as the global host country by the United Nations (UN), where the official celebrations of the event will take place.

According to the UN, Canada has rich and spectacular natural heritage which is a source of pride and identity for Canadians since its abundant natural resources support the country's economic prosperity – through tourism as well as sustainable use – and the health and well-being of its 36 million inhabitants.

"World Environment Day is an important part of Canada's 150th birthday celebrations. As part of the festivities, Canada offers free passes for its national parks throughout 2017," informs the UN.

The UN has urged the world community to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development states as a resolve "to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources".

According to the UN, the Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15 need to be stressed with focus on protecting both the under-water and the on-land ecosystems, as well as  lay stress on sustainable use of marine and terrestrial resources.
