Cars for physically disabled people
Government of India has asked Indian car manufacturers to concentrate on making at least one or two specially designed models for physically challenged persons. This statement was made in Parliament.
THE INDIAN government has asked car manufacturers to contemplate making cars specially designed for physically challenged persons. This statement was made in Parliament. Arun Yadav, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises said that the government wants car manufacturers in India to concentrate on making at least one or two models for physically challenged persons. He also added that the government was successful in providing excise duty concessions on cars and other vehicles meant for physically impaired people.
The minister also said that according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, SIAM, Indian carmakers that were earlier providing cars with automatic transmission for physically challenged persons had to discontinue production of the same. This is because the demand for such vehicles is very low and and making them available readily in the market is not economical. But the growing Indian car industry makes such customised cars and other vehicles to order in order to suit the disability of the person. Some of these cars and vehicles include the Santro, Scorpio, Maruti Omni, Swaraz Madza, Corolla, Esteem, Tata Indigo and Toyota Innova, which are tuned according to the needs of physically challenged persons.
