Case to be filed against owners of MV Khalijia 3, MSC Chitra
Maharashtra government said that a case will be registered under the Environmental Protection Act. The action was initiated by state environment minister, Suresh Shetty, who directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to register a case.
THE MAHARASHTRA government today decided to register a case against the owners and staff of MV Khalijia 3 and MSC Chitra, the two merchant ships, which collided near the Mumbai coast on Saturday morning.

As of now, MSC Chitra is reclining at a 75 degree angle and 250 containers, which were loaded on the ship carry hazardous chemicals. The collision has lead to an oil spill in the sea that is now spreading towards the coast of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra government said that a case will be registered under the Environmental Protection Act. The action was initiated by state environment minister, Suresh Shetty, who directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to register a case.

The captains of both the ships have been summoned and a probe has been ordered. A notice has also been issued to the fishermen in Alibag and Uran areas of Maharashtra as the oil slick continues to spread.

Meanwhile, the coast guard has said that due to tidal waves it will be quite difficult to control the situation. The ship when collided had 283 tonnes of diesel and 88,040 litres of lubricant oil. No activities are taking place in the Mumbai port as it has been temporarily shut down.
