Cataract can now be treated with the help of eye drops
Cataract, the most common cause of vision loss in people over age of 40, can now be easily treated as a team of scientists have identified a new chemical that can be used in eye drops to treat this disease. The group of scientists including one of Indian-origin, have discovered a chemical which can be added to eye drops to help clear up cataract.
The team exploited 2,450 compounds, eventually zeroed it to 12 that are members of a chemical class known as sterols. One of these, known as lanosterol, was shown to reverse cataracts, but because lanosterol has limited solubility the compound had to be injected into the eye for it to exert its effects.

Although cataract can be successfully removed with surgery, but this is a costly way to treat it. Most individuals turn completely blind of severe cataract in developing countries,  due to lack of treatment.

Cataract is the clouding of eye lenses that affect vision. Most cataracts are related to the ageing process. A cataract can occur either in one or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other.

The lens which lies behind the iris and the pupil, which works like a camera and makes us see things clearly, both close and far away. But with age, some of the protein gets clumped together and starts to cloud a small area of the lens.
