Catch - 22, even if Congress wins in Gujarat
Rahul Gandhi might have been envied earlier for being born in an illustrious family of freedom fighters and Prime Ministers. He is the scion of a great political dynasty and here it ends. I have had often appreciated his gentle upbringing and sophisticated background. I also feel that it is no sin to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth as it is not the result of any efforts of lucky one's part.

My problem begins when despite being a lucky mascot you fail to justify your status; you become a copy-cat, chicken-hearted and opportunist to grab power at any cost. That was exactly the case of his late father and now with the boy himself.

Apart his appearance, problems like one day clean shaven and the another day a bearded Che Guevara, he confuses me. He appears and disappears and reappears without notice like a magician's joke; he never focused on one issue with the exception of his latest Gujarat rhetoric.

After Indira Gandhi, Congress became a subservient to RSS. It was Rahul's father who got opened the lock of Babri Masjid; it was Rajeev Gandhi who inducted the Ram Raj Theory in a Secular Democracy to garner new votes and it was his successor Narasimha Rao who was complicit in razing down the Babri Masjid. I've no complaint against the RSS family as even the Muslim Members of Parliament or Assemblies in those days failed to react efficaciously. They were too afraid, chicken-hearted or without soul to play their justified role at this crack of history.

To cut the story short, let us come back to Gujarat 2002. All that happened in those horrific days would be the nightmares to recall for coming generations of Indians especially Muslims. No amount of palliation and gloss over the facts would take away the brutality that colored the pages of history. May not be some speeches that were made by Narendra Modi and others before, during and after the Gujarat-massacres, available for public on internet now but the reality invariably comes back. You can't escape the past! It haunts.

Congress under Sonia had made some silly noises about 'Maut ka saudagar' but did nothing for Gujarati Muslims. For fear of losing the brainwashed votes, none of these great guns of Congress party ever did anything concrete, to help the Muslims of Gujarat. Small NGO's ran by the likes of Teesta Setalvad or Sarabhai tried to do something but that was too little and too late. The victims of Gujarat carnage are still suffering while the clean chits are showered upon the universe and few perpetrators are booked and punished. It was the responsibility of Congress leaders to declare boldly what happened then and what was at stake. No, they didn't do any such thing till this day.

I don't know if this article would appear before or after the counting of votes in Gujarat. However, I was not surprised when I looked back at the entire election campaign run by the BJP and Congress. To expect an iota of positivity for Muslims from RSS Gaushala, it is to call for the sprite. They would play every game at their stadium to hurt and browbeat the Muslim pride. And here Rahul Gandhi has played as the B-Team of BJP.

While visiting every temple at Gujarat and declaring that he was a Shiv bhakt and sport the 'Janeu' - the sacred thread, he forgot completely about the heinous murder of Afrazul and did not bother to condemn the criminal fanatic Shambhu Regar. Rahul Gandhi was posturing as if 9 per cent Muslims of Gujarat have no issues or they deserve no care. They didn't exist! He might win some votes for his deliberate neglect of Muslims and who knows if Congress luckily wins by fluke but his attitude had already done the damage.

Narendra Modi, like many powerful politicians can't carry on till eternity. History bear witness that once the period of a powerful politician eclipsed, the party left behind, falls like house of cards. India is a democratic country and it would remain so despite aberrations. It is shocking to watch the party that carried the legacy of 'freedom of India' would put aside so shamelessly the unflinching commitments against communalism that were made by Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Ambedkar Sardar Patel and Maulana Azad. The Congress party has abandoned its legacy and it doesn't matter if it even wins in Gujarat this time.
