THE OPPOSITION party BJP has objected to Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh's defence of Union Telecom minister A Raja, in the infamous spectrum scam.
The right wing party is justified in its objections because the scam is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is often accused to be working under the influence of political rulers. Even former CBI chief Jogender Singh believes this to be true.
The agency has been suffering with this malaise for a long time. Often in the course of an investigation, the agency has been hauled up by the courts and given stringent strictures. This can only be solved by giving CBI real autonomy.
The first step to ensure this is by the Prime minister making the decision of the agency's chief in consensus with the leader of the opposition. Such a system of selection is working well for posts like heads of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Central Information Commission (CIC).
Further, the process of selecting new incumbents for other senior positions should also be carried out impartially.
