CBSE to revamp examination pattern to reform education: Will it work?
Speaking at Gunn Gaurav Samman Samaroh event of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently, the Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar stressed the need for making education system free from rote learning and staggering the examination stream-wise.

It has been reported that the CBSE was planning to revamp the examination pattern in 2020 for classes X, XII to lay emphasis on understanding, analytical thinking, problem-solving types of questions in the paper. It has been envisaged that exams for vocational subjects will be organised in February and that of academic subjects will commence the end of March.

This transformation will provide simplified affiliation process; more time for evaluation effectiveness; enforcement new evaluation byelaws and use of modern technological and communication tools leading to emphasis to on developing higher order thinking skills such as analytical thinking, critical thinking, creative thinking, reflective thinking and problem-solving skills.

"By ordering the change in the examination system, education reform or change in classroom practices happens is a myth and misconception which has been exploded long ago. There should be reforms in teacher preparation and development rather than thrusting on schools and students new examination to be cracked. We need to understand that the quality of education depends on the quality of teachers and their educators," said Prabha Kishore - retired teacher in Jaipur.

"For us, it is good news since we would have a larger number of students coming to our chain of coaching centres as the school system has already crashed. We have started producing the material and question banks with readymade answers to envisaged question types. For us, it is the matter of knowing expected questions and writing the answers. Even answer scrpit examiners are provided the key to answers and we always produce such keys so that words for the writing the expected answers are acquired by students and re-produced in the examination. It is the part of marks economy on which coaching industry thrives and we are being aided by failed school system and superficial examination system," said a coaching centre director in Jaipur without being named.
