SC has finally set off to put an end to Salwa Judum stating it as unconstitutional and illegal. However, it is a welcome verdict!
SUPREME COURT has finally set off to put an end to Salwa Judum. Salwa Judum which means “peace march” in Gondi language is an anti-naxalite movement being organized by the government with the support of the local tribal people in naxalite prone areas since 2005. This involves employing the local youth as Special Police Officers by the state police department.
Since its inception, it has been inviting controversies from several human rights organizations. There is an allegation of recruiting minors who have not even completed high school to be trained as SPOs. They are paid an amount around Rs. 2,000 per month. They do not even have any provisions of pension or life insurance for putting their lives at risk.
This has also led to several adverse consequences. Provision of arms to youth is a menace to the society as it is nothing but giving them the utmost power to end someone’s life. Also this has put the lives of tribals at risks with attacks both from the naxalites and the Judum.
Finally, the Supreme Court declared that arming civilians to kill someone is unconstitutional and illegal and it is violation of article 14 and article 21 of the Constitution. The politicians who are in appraisal of Judum are not happy with the judgment. They argue that it will increase the strength of left-extremism.
Inspite of all that, it is truly a welcome verdict. There is no harm in ending a mission which failed to serve its purpose. It is in fact, rescuing innocent tribal people from one of the attacks they are facing!
