Centre of Integrative Oncology inaugurated to facilitate quality cancer research: Saumya Swaminathan
Today, the World Cancer Day (WCD) is being observed across the globe. As a part of the observance on the eve of WCD on February 3, the Centre of Integrative Oncology (CIO) was inaugurated at the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR) by Dr Saumya Swaminathan, Secretary, Department of Health Research, and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

Addressing the inaugural session, Sharan said that collaboration between AYUSH and NICPR would lead to development of novel drugs for cancer prevention and management.  The audience was informed that the main objective of the Centre is to build collaborations in the areas of cancer prevention, research and care in an integrated approach involving both modern and traditional medicine.

It was informed that a dedicated team of research fellows would facilitate quality research in the country in the area of cancer research. Also, bridge courses will be introduced for the practitioners who will be working in Centres of integrative medicine.

The minister further added that the evaluation of risk factors for cancer should be thoroughly done, especially focusing on dietary risk factors with thrust on extensive research of natural systems of medicine since they follow a holistic approach, stated an official release.
