Chamba Rumal: Himachal's Republic Day tableau to showcase the traditional art form
The tableau of state of Himachal Pradesh will be a part of the Republic Day function on 26th January, 2017 at New Delhi after a gap of three years again. This year the tableau presents the wonderful traditional art form of Himachal Pradesh - The Chamba Rumal.

In front of the tableau, a beautiful statue of a lady doing embroidery work on Chamba Rumal is depicted. The middle section of the tableau shows Raasleela – a dance performance of Radha and Lord Krishna along with Gopis.

The women of Chamba engaged in traditional embroidery work on Chamba Rumal are also shown in this section. The big Millennium Gate of Chamba town adorns the rear portion of the tableau.

Chamba Rumal is the finest specimen of Pahari Art form that flourished in Chamba Town of Himachal Pradesh during 18th century. Hand woven satin cloth is embroidered with untwisted silken thread in double stitch that appears same on both sides known as 'Dorukha'.

It is a common item of gifts during marriages or celebrations with detailed patterns in bright and pleasing colour schemes. The most common themes inspired by Pahari Miniature Paintings on them are Krishna's Raasleela, Chaupad, Shikaar and Mahabharata etc. The product has been registered for protection under Intellectual Property Rights Agreements in 2007.

Shashi Thakur, Director, Art Language and Culture, who is in New Delhi to monitor the presentation informed that cultural troupes of Sirmour district will also be participating on 29th and 30th January in the 'Bharat Parv' celebrations which are going on in New Delhi.
