Chandrayaan-2 to be launched during 2017-18
India will be launching its second lunar mission the Chandrayaan-2 having the orbiter-lander-rover configuration, Rajya Sabha was informed in response to an unstarred question.
The Members of Parliament were informed through a written reply additionally that the Chandrayaan-2 mission will be launched during 2017-18 by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

Some other details of the mission of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) are that it will have approximate lift-off mass of 2,650 kg and the ISRO-designed orbiter will orbit the Moon at an altitude of 200 km with five instruments on the orbiter.

The lander will make a soft landing along with the rover which will be designed indigenously with the help of Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad and IIT Kanpur. The rover will have six wheels, each driven by an independent electric motor and a total of 10 electric motors will be used for traction and steering.

It is reported that the rover will operate on solar power and will pick up samples of lunar soil and rocks samples to perform on-site chemical analysis and send the data to the Earth station via the orbiter.
