With the help of the data shared by India's Chandrayan mission, NASA has detected magmatic water locked deep under the lunar surface, reported Deccan Herald. Though, the existence of magmatic water in lunar samples brought back to the earth during the Apollo Mission was detected earlier, but Chandrayan mission had remotely detected the same.
According to scientists, magmatic water contains a large amount of hydroxyl - a molecule consisting of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom, as compared to normal water which has two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.
Unlike magmatic water, pure distilled water is an electrically inert chemical compound with the chemical formula H2O and it is not conductive of electricity nor affected by magnetism. However, the drinking water contains salts composed of positively negatively charged ions so that it may be electrically conductive and susceptible to magnetic influences.
Pure water, though being a poor conductor is not a perfect insulator as it contains ions due to the self-ionization property and hence can be converted into hydroxyl under favourable conditions as must have happened on the moon due to strong solar winds, it is being conjectured.
Scientists are of the view that magmatic water under lunar surface in a thin layer formed from solar wind hitting the Moon's surface might have induced magmatic properties to it.
