Character overshadows personality
Personality is not a qualification. It is the purpose for which man was created. A person, however, learned and qualified in his life's work, in whom character is absent, is devoid of that beauty which makes personality fragrant.
CHARACTER IS like a tree and personality is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

Personality and its relationship to achievements in life were once given a lot of weightage. More recently, after the collapse of WIPRO, success gone sour -saga of Lalit Modi at T-Twenty and still a nightmare ENRON, the business community seems to have rediscovered the importance of character as a determinant of achievement—especially in the senior ranks.

These represent different insights in the popular literature, because personality and character are usually considered separately. Nonetheless, the concepts of ‘character’ and ‘personality’ are closely linked; for example, Aristotle defined character in dispositional terms that are synonymous with the contemporary concept of personality. Moreover, the first academic journal devoted to personality research, was called Character and Personality, indicating how both are entwined. How? In terms of looks or charisma?

Gordon Allport, remarked,“Character is personality evaluated, personality is character devaluated”.
Mark Twin said, “Everyone is a moon and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody”.

There have been instances where certain individuals with magnetic personality ran up the ladders of success despite bleak and black character and their percentage is more in the political arena. But the fact that we are aware of that shadow of grey in their character is testimony to weak foundations on which these personality stands upon. Such personality is shallow and does not sustain for long. I don’t wish to name the personalities with shallow characters or the well known personalities with perfect aroma of character or personality. Because I feel the character is the fuel that provides glow to the personality more firmly than glamour or charisma.

What do you seek in another person, what do you expect in a friend? You want him rich, of a high position, a great power, wonderful qualifications, wide influence; but beyond and above all you expect from a friend the qualities which constitute real personality. If one's friend lacks that personality, all the above things are of but little use and value.

Personality is not a qualification. It is the purpose for which man was created. A person, however, learned and qualified in his life's work, in whom character is absent, is devoid of that beauty which makes personality fragrant.

It is amusing sometimes to watch how good manners annoy someone, who is proud of his bad manners.

Life is an intoxication and the effect of this intoxication is negligence. The Hindu words dharma (religiousness) and adharma (irreligiousness) signify that one's duty in life is dharma and the neglect of the same is adharma. The one who is not conscientious in his life is indeed irreligious and there character emerges the ultimate winner.
