Chemical plant endangers lives of people in Rohtak village
People are up in arms against Bharat Rasayan Udhyog , A unit manufacturing insecticides at village Mokhra falling in famous Meham Chobisi area in Rohtak , home district of Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
MEDIA EXPOSURE of  the role of politicians in escape of Warren Anderson, chief of   Union Carbide gas factory at Bhopal  in connection with criminal case concerning gas leakage resulting into   the death of about twenty thousands persons and disabling lakhs of people have  brought into light  a similar chemical  factory  although of not that magnitude in  Haryana bordering the national capital.
 
People are up in arms against Bharat  Rasayan Udhyog , A unit manufacturing insecticides  at village  Mokhra  falling  in famous Meham Chobisi  area in  Rohtak , home district of  Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
 
They  have sent memorandum to  Dr manmohan Singh, Prime Minister, and  Haryana  Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda , through   Rohtak ,  Deputy Commissioner , P.C.Meena  demanding  shifting of the factory from the  area  hoping that in view of  media highlight on Union Carbide  their  voice will be listened in the corridors of the power.
 
The  unit started  two decades back  about two kilometers from  largely populated Mokhra  village is causing  breathing problems to the residents of the village.  The discharge  of  effluents without any specific  provisions  is contaminating the ground  water. In  rainy season  it percolates into  underground water leading to contamination.
 
Residents of village  Mokhra namely Sarpanch Samunder Singh, Ramphal,  Baljit,  Vedpal,Sonu, Rajesh, Surinder, Parveen,  jaibhagwan,  Ravi, Om Singh , Sandeep and  Ajay   have alleged in the representation sent to the Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda  that  the smell emanating from the factory has made their life hell.
 
Although the factory  owners  claims that they have made adequate safety measures  in their  plant and their is no need of any panic .The  pollution control authorities  of the state which issues notices to units on flimsy grounds are sitting silent spectator  on this factory.The  modus operandi of the powerful owners of the factory is that they keep everybody  right from politicians cutting across party lines, bureaucrats  and other concerned authorities in good humour.  
 
Considering the village youth as potential threat to them they keep them busy in sports and other activities donating generously for this purpose.The villagers have demanded that the factory may be shifted from the present site immediately  and samples of water, air and soil  of the area be taken for checking the pollution level  and be tested from some independent  lab.
 
They have also sent an sos to Sunita Narayan,  director of center for science and environment to send her team   to assess the situation.  They  have alleged that gas leakage from the  factory is causing  breathing problems  besides causing  several diseases like T.B.,Asthma, throat infection  , burning of eyes , dermatological  ailments,impotency   adding that the consumption of contaminated  under ground water  is leading to neuropathies  and various organ dysfunctions  problems.
 
The example of  Japan  is an eye opener  where contamination of water with mercury   has led  to MinaMata  diseases  among the fishermen of the area. They  have questioned the wisdom of the authorities  in allowing the hazardous unit   near the inhabited area.  Besides  the  unbearable smell from the factory   is causing  irritation in eyes and airways system.
 
The residents allege that  due to  leakage of affluents by the factory  the drinking water of the village  has become unfit for  human consumption.  The large  number of animals have  caught  diseases  and  land near the factory is unfit   for  agriculture .   They   told the deputy commissioner that fifteen years back  standing crops in about thirty acres of land  was destroyed due to gas leak  from the plant.

in a significant development rohtak deputy commissioner . P.C.Meena has directed pollution control authorities to probe the matter. meanwhile residents of Bahu village adjoining to Mokhra has also joined the fray for shifting the factory .
