Chennai BPO date rape case
A call centre employee with a prominent BPO in Chennai was arrested few days back on charges of drugging and then raping his female colleague. This, however, seems to be a case of loose lifestyle practices and its eerie aftermath.

A CALL centre based crime that came to light a few days ago from Chennai, exposing an alleged rape attempt by a call centre trainer, has once again brought to the fore the fact that all is not well with this 24x7 employment environment. Considering the number of educated girls finding employment in Business Process Outsourcings (BPOs), incidents like these may not raise many eyebrows. Still, it is worth noting here that something is fishy in this professional sphere.

The first story that was aired on SUN TV and NDTV went on like this: A 27-year-old call centre trainer with a prominent call centre in Chennai is reported to have lured a 25-year old colleague to his friend’s place and managed to drug her by offering her a drink mixed with date rape drug. The police officer in-charge said that the girl woke up the following day only to find herself sexually assaulted. She then lodged a complaint and the boy was arrested. And later he confessed that he did what she had said in the complaint. A video footage of the boy was also shown: An emotional boy in a bad shape and he was weeping like anything.

One of this writer’s associates met this boy in custody and took stock of the whole incident. The story goes like this: The girl in question is one of not-so-good-conduct and had been going out with this boy for quite some time, and on this particular day, as usual they were together for long, till 11 pm. They together went to the boy’s place and they drugged themselves, and both fell asleep on the same bed.

The following day she woke up, surprised, because she was to go back to her hostel the previous day. Somehow, she managed to get back to her hostel the same morning, but the hostel authorities denied entry and asked her to bring her parents. With no other way out, she described the whole story to her parents. They, having had a lot of trouble with this girl’s lifestyle, found an opportunity in this boy. They deliberately framed a case and cornered him.

They were able to do this because one of the relatives of this girl is working in a prominent FM station in Chennai, and he is reported to have influenced the media and police to give undue hype to this issue. The girl’s family now says that if the boy is ready to marry this girl, they would consider withdrawing the case. However, the boy is not ready and he is languishing behind bars hoping that he would be heard in a court of law and would be able to prove his being as one of the parties involved in the case, rather than his innocence.

It is indeed two contradicting versions of the same story. For a simple reader, these stories could sound as ‘convenient versions’, as to defend their positions. These stories raise a couple of questions:

If we go by the girl’s story, why did she go to a bachelor’s place alone and shared a drink with him that too at an inappropriate time?

From the boy’s point of view, how come he found it acceptable to take an acquaintance to his place and share drinks with drugs?

Would she have gone back to her parents and reported it to them, if her hostel authorities had given her the permission to enter hostel the following day?

If the whole course of events had gone unnoticed, wouldn’t these two have continued this practice?

How is it alright for her parents, if she is married to the same boy who had allegedly raped her? Is it honour marriage or is such a marriage be successful in the long run?

Unless there is enough backing from her family, would she have gone to this extent?

Looking at the boy’s version of the incident, it doesn’t sound that the family is trying to regain the reputation of the family, which had long been affected by the inappropriate lifestyle of the girl?

There is something wrong with both the parties involved. Since the case has something to do with alleged sex, both the parties are bound to feel the pinch. But from a humanitarian point of view, the boy, who suffered the most humiliating experience from the police and the media, deserves a little consideration.

Primarily and circumstantially, this is not a rape case. This is a case of loose lifestyle practices and its eerie aftermaths. The boy should have had the reason to realise the consequences of drugging, and the girl should have been girl enough not to be in such company. And now if the marriage between the two parties is a solution to this problem, what precedent does it create in the call centre/BPO employment environs?

Thousands of brilliant boys and girls are working in BPOs 24x7. And the safety of their working environments should in no way be allowed to be threatened either by a pair of stray employees like ones in question or by the insensitive and irresponsible media that feed on the misfortunes of the victims.

Let’s look at future proposition.

If the real story gets unfolded in the court, and the boy is proved to be partly responsible for the crime, who is going to compensate the loss of face he had suffered?

How come the media is able to air video footages of a reputed call centre employee without ascertaining the veracity of the charges?

Is media going to be accountable to this boy, if the court finds both the parties responsible and guilty?

Will this girl be given the same video and media coverage at that time or she will go scot-free?

So is it not right to say that the media’s behaviour is outrageous and atrocious? Media houses have had their pound of flesh from this case. Who feels the pinch? Who is hunter and who gets hunted?

It is high time we had a legal regime to bring visual media accountability and rein in the media, which tarnishes the individuals and their fortunes on the grounds of media responsibility. There should be a system to keep the identity of the arrested accused confidential till he or she is proved guilty. Otherwise, cases like this, like Aarushi murder case, will surface again and media and its manipulators would have field days prying on the lives of both the accused and the acquitted.

.Ooh' .. I was just browsing the net for a case study like this, because it's our prelim exam, anyway, the case should be weighed fairly,it's kind of complicated, though.Involving media,of course, doesn't assure the case's confidentiality. We very well know that the media's main obligation is to be the "watchdog" of the public. These people should take responsibility for their actions if they don't wat embarrassment, you know.
.I dont know who is at fault here - but lets say if the girl of of loose character then also no one gets a right of raping her. Media should throw the loght on each every case but should not disclose the names of suspects untli proven guilty

Thank you Veer for that comment. my point is to have balanced, democratic and cilised media order. not a media menace that eats on the vicitim without any facts and figures at hand. than you ;jaypee
.I appreciate the balanced view taken by the author in writing. The broadcast media has no sense of responsibility- they are ready to air reality shows wherein the judges fight as though they are paid for it, the partcipants are ridiculed and insulted and all these for the sake of TRPs. The media claims protection saying it can keep its source of information confidential. Trial by media needs to be put to rest once for all. Sensational Crime reporting by the media needs to be banned and media should be prosecuted if they have exceeded their limits. 90% of the Indian media is controlled by political bosses and these media houses act as stooges of the political bosses. BPO is a very soft target as an industry- do any of these media reporters dare to visit coffee and tea plantations and fight for the human rights of women who are daily raped and sexually harassed? There is a class bias in media and their production managers of content on crime reporting are no better than any C grade masala movie Director. They have a sadistic pleasure reenacting a human right violation in the garb of press immunity and social responsibility.

Dear Sreved, I am glad that you hve read the article and reached at the same poiont of view. our media at times is a menace. they have scant regard for human rights and media eithcs. thanks
.I don't agree with your view of blaming the media. It is media's job to report incidents. Without them the whole affair would not have come to light. If the media has misrepresented any facts then only it is liable for punishment.

Mr. Venkat. you will have to wear the shoes to feel the pinch. the supreme court justice commenting on the other day that the medias are found to be portraying the accused as quilty. media does not have the right to videograph you and platter it out to the rest of the world because you are suspected to be os and s. it is violationof human rights of the first order. seeing our face on the tv is the end of our imbitions. so it is ok to be accepting the rpesent media culture. thak for the comment. media needs to keep something incamera. decency dictates it.

Why don;t you put the company name here. So that we will be aware of the bad culture and environment created by the company. enough damage has been done. dowe need to tarnish the orgnization. do wehave any idea if it is an isolated incident caused by the straying of a particular emploee and his girl? please see my reader, the issue is why do this visual media feast on the misfortunes of a couple of individuals. the boy is not found guilty but accused. the girl is not acqquitted either. how come the media make milieages out of one boy and forget the rest of the whole community that makes life our BPO and and similary 24/7 environs. thier contribution to the economy is much more than this stupid camera carryiing bipeds of thise news channels. thanks for reading and commenting. jaypee
Amishaji_ Who fault it is , why should company or boy suffer because of this go go street girl..
.I too feel that It is high time we had a legal regime to bring visual media accountability and rein in the media, which tarnishes the individuals and their fortunes on the grounds of media responsibility. Point conveyed is of serious nature.Media people are in the rat race to attract public attention by making stories with jargons and slangs.

Col, Kulkarni. My highest compliments to you from US Sir. I agree with your note. Jaypee , does not make a valid point. Entire Brand names of company is out the window, this go go girl should be taken to civil court. May God Bless you
Mr. Col: a gree with your view that this visual media needs to be pulled as and when there is an outrage on the individual in the name of the stupid media responsiblity. they are scavengers and prying on the illuck and miseries of the individuals. thanks for your concern and for reading me. jaypee.

.I work with a call center myself for about 5 years now.We do not exactly know what happend with these guys but i always see that anytime something like this happens the ethics and work culture of the whole industry is questioned. I really would like to reiterate that the work enviornment or the culture is very decent and highly motivating for fresh graduates as well as experienced candidates. Ever since night shifts have come into the market there were lots of rumours and criticism happenning around. If we can all think for a minute how many of us really think just because working in night shift people loose their morals and forget their culture. How many of us can bet that everyone who is not working in night shift are saints. Just because of few incidents and people creating a hype as if whole industry is rotten or useless needs to stop.Media can only stop these kind of rumours from spreading and create awarness.Give all good people working in the night shifts same respect and credit for their career.

i understand your concern. this author has great regards for anyone who is working a eking out a life whether he or she is working 24/4 or whatever. my point is that the work culute of such an environment needs tobe protected and the onus lies on every one of us ; the public, the employees and the media. it is unfortunate that stray incidents get hyped and ballooned beyond proportion. lets hope things would change and media will deveiate into some sense next time. thank you for reading me. jaypee
.Very well presented. I fully agree with the view that media is exceeding the limits and need to be restrained.

.what ever can be the truth, the person is accused not yet proved guilty yet, at least the medias could have given him the consideration of that, Media's should be better than this cannot ruin any one's life just for the sake to create the sensation...
