Chennai Storytelling Festival brings alive various facets and hues of storytelling
The ten-day international Chennai Storytelling Festival- 2017 opened on February 3 with the performance of the world famous storyteller Regina Ress of New York City (NYC).

The title of the story performed at the inaugural session was "She was not Afraid: Stories of Brave and Wise Women" which consisted of the stories about Goddesses from around the world as well as the real and imaginary women of NYC, informed the Director of the World Storytelling Institute in Chennai.

On February 4 and 5, several Storytelling Performances were staged along the storytelling workshops for the parents along with the workshops on "Using Storytelling to Facilitate Moral Development, and "Learning of Languages and Concepts in Children" and "Creating and Using Illustrations to Accompany Storytelling".

Another interesting workshop was the one titled "Exploring Women's Issues in a Story by Rabindranath Tagore" to highlight the gender issues through storytelling.

Also, workshops on 'Ways of Telling Stories to Children' and 'Ways of Using Storytelling with Singing and Movement to Teach Languages to Children' will be held.

"Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a librarian, or someone who simply enjoys spending time with children -- storytelling, music, and movement can be ways to engage, observe, and educate children while having a delightful time together. In this highly participatory workshop, we will work with traditional and personal stories and a game-song to explore how these arts can be both captivating and educational," stated Regina Ress, one of the workshop leaders who advocates for storytelling to children with movement and singing.

Further, before the festival culminated the global webcast-video conference on "Storytelling in the World Today: Including Discussion of Storytelling for Teaching and Learning, and Therapeutic Uses of Storytelling".

The storytellers from Cook Islands and Tamil Nadu will also perform in the festival. Seminars and workshops will continue for people and students of all ages during the festival. On the last day some noted performers will give storytelling performances for people of all ages.
