Childhood...here today, gone tomorrow.
Let me begin with a recent incident, which prompted me to write this. One evening I was returning home by train. I saw some children of 8-10 years of age who were cleaning the floor of the train and afterward begged for some money.
THIS IS  not the first article of this type, and nor will it be the last. In fact, a lot is written on this, but very less is actually done. What I am talking about is child labour.

Let me begin with a recent incident, which prompted me to write this. One evening I was returning home by train. I saw some children of 8-10 years of age who were cleaning the floor of the train and afterward begged for some money. They didn’t have clothes to wear in that chilly weather. They just managed by wearing a pair of dirty pants only, while on the other hand we passengers were wearing jeans, sweaters, jackets etc. Few of us give them a one rupee coin while the others didn’t take much interest.

Here I have question, could we have helped them in a better way them?

We could help them by giving some money, so that at least they can eat at night, but is it enough for their shelter, is it enough for clothes? This story is similar to that of the famous book and movie Slumdog Millionaire, but I don’t think they could all become millionaires. They are illiterate and in all probabilities will lead a life of misery and violence.

We can help them but not just giving some money, but also by showing them opportunities to create a better life. I want them to help to create a better India and a better Earth. I have given one example but there are thousands of children wandering here and there for food. They work in a tea shop, for a small amount of money to feed themselves.

They are at that stage of life where they only have the need of food they don’t know the meaning of education, they don’t know the meaning of letters.

It is my request to the government to stop fighting against each other and do something for the poor little kids. They are helpless but we are not. We can try our best to help them. We can establish some schools for them. But, for that we need all the help of the government.

Sandhya, yes we can do this, humanity is still there in India, and if you ask me to count, I can see three names YOU,ME, and DIVYA.... if we step frwrd once, the people behind us, will step Twice... I dont knw wht I said... but I think we can get rid of this so soon.....
.hi rajat nice article....its been so long that we are waiting for the goverment to do something....i dont think that goverment will do anythng....as they say "charity begins at home" ....y do we employ kids....look at the maids who are working for us at our places....how many of us actualy talk to them n tell them not to force their children in the same thing they are doing....start treating them first...i would request every1 to stop child labor, wherever you c children working, stop them....most of the times they are doing this under their parents orders...warn their parents abt the legal action that we can take if they employ their children...n yes till that time, those unlucky children who already in this,,,,they need our help

Divya, I had gone through ur comment and I am thousand times agree with you. Divya you know what, whenever we step ahead to stop the child from working on a shop, he/she shout bac at us, and the people around that place laughed at us, and the shop owner shouted very angrily. I am not giving some excuses, I am sort listing the problems. Even if we consult to the police officer, they used to say us, "Let him/her work, whats ur problem", and as we are kid they hardly pay any attentionto us. I am saying these all because I faced that. And if we want to go to the higher authority, sometimes the same reply we have to hear. The matter is that, we the litterate persons first need to create some seminars or discussion sessions, and we need to protest together, if we can do that, then we step forward to the smarter India.....
