THIS IS not the first article of this type, and nor will it be the last. In fact, a lot is written on this, but very less is actually done. What I am talking about is child labour.
Let me begin with a recent incident, which prompted me to write this. One evening I was returning home by train. I saw some children of 8-10 years of age who were cleaning the floor of the train and afterward begged for some money. They didn’t have clothes to wear in that chilly weather. They just managed by wearing a pair of dirty pants only, while on the other hand we passengers were wearing jeans, sweaters, jackets etc. Few of us give them a one rupee coin while the others didn’t take much interest.
Here I have question, could we have helped them in a better way them?
We could help them by giving some money, so that at least they can eat at night, but is it enough for their shelter, is it enough for clothes? This story is similar to that of the famous book and movie Slumdog Millionaire, but I don’t think they could all become millionaires. They are illiterate and in all probabilities will lead a life of misery and violence.
We can help them but not just giving some money, but also by showing them opportunities to create a better life. I want them to help to create a better India and a better Earth. I have given one example but there are thousands of children wandering here and there for food. They work in a tea shop, for a small amount of money to feed themselves.
They are at that stage of life where they only have the need of food they don’t know the meaning of education, they don’t know the meaning of letters.
It is my request to the government to stop fighting against each other and do something for the poor little kids. They are helpless but we are not. We can try our best to help them. We can establish some schools for them. But, for that we need all the help of the government.
